In Store Demonstrator

Opportunities for earning extra income comes in all shapes and sizes and for those who have a little time on their hands this might be just up your street.

Supermarkets and department stores are crying out for confident, enthusiastic people. You might be asked to show off your cooking skills, hold a food tasting or demonstrate a new brand of tin opener, the variety of product wanting promotion is endless

The beauty of this is you have the opportunity to work as many or as few hours as you wish as most work is on a short term contract.

As a store demonstrator you will be contracted to promote all kinds of products. This range from promoting a brand new product or an advertising campaign which has a special promotion on at this time.

Encouraging customers to stop at your display and giving out free samples is the main activity. Also will will be asked to demonstrate the product and promote the special offers or discounts. Sales records will need to be kept along with making sure the display area is fully stocked as well as setting up and taking down the displays.

There are opportunities to become a full-time employee by a store or self-employed as a freelance demonstrator finding work through an agency.

If you have good communication skills and an enthusiastic attitude and have previous experience with dealing with the public, you will have no trouble finding work.

No formal qualifications to work are necessary as a store demonstrator, although you may need a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate to work with certain food products. You will need to be briefed fully on the products you are promoting, most stores would have an in-house induction and training programme for you to join in.

Pay for freelance and part-time work is usually £6 an hour or £60 right up to a staggering £240 a day. With this you will get expenses for both food and travel. If you decide you like this and take it on full time, expect £11,000 to £17,000 a year.

You need to be aware that working hours are not usually 9-5 and would included weekends where most customers are out shopping. The nature of the job would entail that most contracts would last anything from a day to a week at most.

If you enjoy this type of work and get good results for your contractor it could lead into a sales or customer service career for you. With experience behind you agency, recruiting and training demonstrators and dealing with clients could be the next stone to step on. Most jobs are advertised in the local press, Job Centre Plus centres and recruitment agencies.
